Challenge by choice
Challenge By Choice is a concept attributed to Project Adventure in the 1970s. It is now a central operating philosophy for all Interactive Dynamics programming. The premise is that all participants have the ability to choose, at all times, the level at which they will engage in any given activity. The choice is always up to the individual. This allows the "locus of control" to remain with the individual and not with the other team members or facilitator.
If for any reason an individual feels uncomfortable or uncertain about participating in an activity, that person may choose a decreased level of activity.
This choice does not imply that an individual may abandon the group or activity when adopting the Challenge By Choice credo. When an individual decides to participate at a different level, that choice will be respected by the facilitator and other group members. But that person is asked to always find some way of continuing to add value to the group experience. Taking on a less "active" role but remaining present with the group is the intent of Challenge By Choice.
Challenge By Choice means:
ï Participants always have the right to choose their own level of participation
ï Participants are asked to add value to the group and the experience at all times
ï Participants are asked to respect and value the decisions of all group members
Full Value Commitment
The Full Value Commitment is an agreement by participants that seeks to create the most effective learning environment for all group members. Individuals are asked to agree to these behavioral guidelines as a way for ensuring that everyone fully understands what is expected and what is accepted.
The Full Value Commitment:
ï encourages people to share their ideas and opinions openly and honestly
ï promotes giving feedback - positive as well as critical - when appropriate
ï asks people to listen and communicate effectively with each other
ï encourages all participants to work together to create a safe and caring learning environment
The Full Value Commitment is a useful device to stimulate learning and help people achieve their goals while participating in a group experience. When working in groups, it is helpful to have members agree to certain guidelines, an agreement under which people can effectively operate. To us, it is the essence of what a real learning community or organization is about.
